We are all familiar with the age-old problem of bolted assemblies becoming undone. The very nature of the assembly is the basis of the problem. In a bolted joint tightening the nut stretches the bolt a little. There is a tension between the two mated thread surfaces that hold the two sections of the joint together. The nut is being pushed off the bolt by the force in the system. Friction stops the threads turning and the nut unscrewing. We all know this and that is why we tap a nut or bolt, or even the lid of a jar, to loosen or free up an assembly.

In practice there are a number of individual or combined causes for bolts to loosen – poor assembly or under tightening, vibration, relaxation of thread materials, temperature changes, dynamic loading or shock etc.
